got shade?   Grow a Moss Garden ........
Moss Milkshake

Moss Milkshake

Put away the kitchen blender and head to the garden!

Smartly packaged dry mix of moss fragments, buttermilk powder for acidification, and water-retention agents to mix with water and spread in the garden.  The Moss Milkshake turns into a slurry that feels a bit like applesauce.

Moss Milkshake is terrific for any gardener with a shady spot to fill.  Moss never requires fertilizer, herbicide, or pesticide.  No watering once established, which takes only two or three months.

Covers 15 to 20 square feet

-          Mix with water in a pail and smear on ground, or sprinkle dry and water in.

-          Directions included inside each carton.

-          Established mosses go dormant in the winter.

Live Moss Garden Packs

Live mosses are for the gardener who wants an instant moss garden.  The mosses are dried and dormant and will rehydrate and start growing as soon as they are watered.  Planting is as easy as dunking each piece in water and tamping on the ground.

a)      Packaged in a biodegradable, compostable bag (not in a box as shown)

b)      Eco-friendly – it requires no fertilizer, herbicide, or pesticide ever, and no water once established, which takes only a few weeks.

Contains two (2) square feet of sheet and clump mosses, conveniently packaged and ready to plant.

Since moss obtains all their nutrients from the air (moss has no true roots), moss plants require nothing more than shade, acidic soil, and adequate moisture to flourish. All moss plants need is a firm soil bed in a location with adequate shade. It is also imperative that the area in which moss plants will be grown is blown or swept clear of any existing plants, leaves or debris. Moss also seems to prefer poor quality soils with low nutrient levels.

                                     Moss Transplanting Techniques

1.       Make sure you are transplanting your moss into a shady area, preferably with a

northern exposure.  Moss also prefers moist, damp areas.

The soil bed should be free of debris (raking and then sweeping or leaf blowing

the area is advised).  Amending the soil with peat moss is NOT recommended.

Remove any existing grass and weeds by hand or kill them off with sulfur

products mentioned below. DO NOT use weed killers in areas where moss will be

transplanted.  Covering weeds with black plastic is also an option.

2.       Our mosses are collected in a region of Northeastern PA where a PH of 5.0 – 5.5

Is most common – testing to ensure that you are in this range is ideal.  Numbers

lower than 5.0 (more acidic) are fine, higher numbers need to be adjusted with a

sulfur product such as our wettable sulfur.  A PH test kit or test meter is also

available through Moss Acres.

3.       If your soil PH is too high, simply spray the area or drop spread with wettable

sulfur or a sulfur powder prior to transplanting.  Make sure the sulfur is

watered into the soil for at least a week before planting. (sulfur can burn the

moss).

4.       Rake the area to make a thin layer of fine, loose soil. (do not turn the soil)

5.       Wet the soil surface and then firmly press and tamp the section (s) of moss into

the soil, making certain to leave no air pockets underneath.

6.       Thoroughly soak the moss, and continue to water or mist for at least 3-4 weeks, or

as needed depending upon climate, site, and weather conditions.

7.       Be on the watch for birds, squirrels and rodents that may try to search for grubs

and insects under the moss.  If they begin to “pick” at the moss, you may need to

cover the area with our ¼ “Protective Mesh Netting”.

8.       Keep leaves and other debris of the moss.  Do not rake moss to remove leaves.

Use a broom, leaf blower, or the netting mentioned above for catching and then

easily removing the leaves once they are down.

9.       Please keep us informed of your success, we are always looking for feedback and

photos of projects for our website.
