Tips & Tricks for Speedy Germination:
Soaking seeds in water (room temperature) overnight can help speed germination. Seeds such as peas and beans need to take up lots of water before they germinate. This can be a slow process in some soil types or with fluctuating moisture. Soaking the seeds will help overcome this hurdle. Some seeds such as lavendar can be very slow to germinate (naturally). Soaking these seeds will help as well.
Warm Soil is necessary for many summer crops to germinate. Beans, corn, melons, cucumbers, and squash all prefer soil about 60-60 degrees F for vigorous germination. Many crops will also germinate more quickly as soil temps go up. Try warming up your soil before you sow by using black landscape fabric (I've also seen black plastic) on top of the ground or upside down nursery containers to get your garden growing sooner.
